About Basenji Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Basenji, originating in Central Africa (Congo), is a small, athletic hound developed for hunting by sight and scent and is famed for being largely barkless, instead making a unique yodel. Typically 16-17 inches tall and 22-24 pounds, it has a short, fine coat, erect ears, a wrinkled forehead, and a tightly curled tail, and is classified in the Hound Group. Energetic and intelligent with an independent yet affectionate temperament, it needs daily vigorous exercise, mental enrichment, and a securely fenced area due to a strong prey drive and unreliable off leash recall. Grooming is minimal, Basenjis are naturally clean, shed moderately, and drool very little, but nails, teeth, and occasional brushing need attention; they are not hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include Fanconi syndrome, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and hip issues, so responsible screening is important.

- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
