About Australian Terrier Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Australian Terrier, developed in Australia during the 19th century from rough coated British terriers, is a small earthdog in the Terrier Group bred to hunt rats, snakes, and vermin while serving as a devoted farm companion. Standing 10-11 inches tall and weighing 15-20 pounds, this sturdy little dog carries a harsh, weatherproof double coat in blue and tan, solid red, or sandy, requiring weekly brushing, periodic hand stripping, and routine nail and dental care. Spirited, alert, and deeply loyal, Aussies are confident without being quarrelsome and thrive on 30-45 minutes of daily exercise plus mental challenges. They adapt well to families, apartments, and multi pet homes when socialized early.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
