The Australian Shepherd, an AKC Herding Group breed developed in the American West to work livestock, is a medium sized, agile, and exceptionally intelligent dog with very high energy and a strong work drive, best suited to active homes. Typically 18-23 inches tall and 40-65 pounds, it has a weather resistant double coat in varied colors (often merle) and sometimes a natural bobtail; it sheds year round with heavier seasonal sheds and needs regular brushing rather than intensive grooming. Aussies thrive on daily vigorous exercise and mental challenges, excel at training and dog sports, are loyal with family yet often reserved with strangers, and their herding instincts may lead to nipping or chasing if not directed. They are not hypoallergenic and usually drool little. Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, eye issues such as cataracts, epilepsy, and sensitivity to certain medications; responsible breeding, early socialization, and routine vet care help manage risks.
