About American Hairless Terrier Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The American Hairless Terrier, developed in Louisiana in the 1970s from a hairless Rat Terrier puppy, is a small, spirited breed in the AKC Terrier Group originally bred as a companion and small game alert dog. Standing 12-16 inches tall and weighing 12-16 pounds, they are compact, muscular, and surprisingly athletic. The hairless variety has smooth, warm skin requiring sunscreen, protective clothing in cold weather, and regular bathing, while a coated variety also exists. Energetic, curious, and clever, they thrive with daily play, brisk walks, and mental stimulation. Affectionate and playful, they suit active families, apartment dwellers, and allergy sensitive homes. Health concerns include skin allergies, sunburn, patellar luxation, Legg Calve Perthes disease, and hip dysplasia.
