About American Foxhound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The American Foxhound, a medium to large member of the Hound Group developed in the United States for pack fox hunting, is a lean, long legged scent hound with a short, hard coat that sheds and drools little. Friendly yet independent and driven by scent, they are gentle with families but can be vocal and single‑minded on a trail, so early recall training, a secure yard, and ample daily exercise (running, hiking, scent games) are essential. Grooming is simple, occasional brushing plus routine ear checks, nail trims, and dental care, making them low maintenance. Common health considerations include hip dysplasia, ear infections, and thyroid issues; as a deep‑chested breed, monitor for bloat. Typical size is about 21-25 inches at the shoulder and 55-70 pounds. They are not hypoallergenic.
