About Akita Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Akita, a large Working Group breed from Japan developed for guarding and hunting big game, is known for its dignified, loyal, and strongly protective nature, typically reserved with strangers but loving with family. Powerfully built with a broad head, erect ears, a thick double coat, and a curled tail, it is a high‑energy, independent dog that needs daily vigorous exercise, early socialization, and consistent, experienced training. Grooming is moderate, weekly brushing with heavier attention during seasonal shedding, and drooling is usually low to moderate; Akitas shed heavily and are not hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, bloat, eye issues such as progressive retinal atrophy, and immune‑related skin conditions like sebaceous adenitis. Typically 24-28 inches tall and 70-130 pounds, the Akita thrives with committed owners who can meet its exercise, training, and social needs.

When researching Akita breeders, ask for documentation of health screening on both parents. Ethical breeders test for breed appropriate conditions through OFA, PennHIP, or breed club specified DNA panels before breeding.
Before You Choose a Akita Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?
Screened Akita breeders on PuppyReports have submitted documentation, responded to the platform, and maintain an active PuppyReports™ Card. Research any breeder before you make a commitment.
