About Afghan Hound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Afghan Hound, a large hound from Afghanistan developed to hunt swift game over rugged terrain, belongs to the Hound Group and is known for a dignified, independent, and sometimes aloof temperament balanced by affection for family. Tall and athletic (about 25-27 inches, 50-60 pounds), it features a narrow head with a silky topknot, a long flowing coat, and a ringed tail. Energy is moderate day to day, but it needs regular exercise and opportunities to sprint, along with patient, positive training. Grooming is intensive, daily brushing and regular baths are needed to prevent mats, and shedding is moderate; it is not considered hypoallergenic. Potential health concerns include hip problems, cataracts and other eye issues, thyroid disorders, and bloat, so owners should be prepared for consistent coat care, routine vet checks, and a secure area for safe running.
