About Affenpinscher Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Affenpinscher, originating in Germany as a nimble ratter and now classified in the Toy Group, is a sturdy, toy sized companion (about 9, 11.5 inches tall and 7-10 pounds) known for its playful, bold, and sometimes stubborn temperament. Distinguished by a rough, wiry coat and “monkey like” face with bushy brows and a beard, it has moderate energy needs met by daily walks and indoor play, plus consistent, positive training and early socialization. Grooming is moderate: weekly brushing with periodic hand stripping or professional care keeps the coat tidy; shedding is low to moderate and the breed is not considered hypoallergenic. Owners should watch heat exposure due to the short muzzle and be mindful of potential health issues such as patellar luxation, Legg Calvé-Perthes disease, eye problems (like ulcers or cataracts), dental crowding, and occasional breathing sensitivity, making routine veterinary and dental care important.
