Something remarkable is happening in the dog breeding community. Across breeds, across regions, and across generations of breeders, a movement toward radical transparency is reshaping how responsible...
The Business Case for Openness
A 2025 survey of 1,200 puppy buyers found that the #1 factor in choosing a breeder — above price, above location, above breed reputation — was "willingness to share health testing results and facility information." Seventy-three percent of respondents said they would pay a premium for a puppy from a breeder with verifiable, publicly accessible health data. The market is demanding transparency, and the breeders who respond are winning.
Breeders who maintain complete PuppyReports profiles report 40% shorter time-to-placement for their litters compared to breeders without profiles. They also report fewer post-sale disputes, fewer "buyer's remorse" returns, and significantly more referral business. Transparency doesn't just build trust — it builds revenue.
What Transparency Looks Like
It's not just posting OFA numbers (though that's the starting point). The breeders leading this shift are sharing: complete health testing results for every breeding dog (including results that aren't perfect), puppy socialization protocols and photos, veterinary care records and expenses, sales contracts (publicly posted, not just shown to buyers), and clear breeding goals with measurable outcomes.
Some go further: publishing their breeding philosophy, explaining why specific pairs were chosen, and documenting the outcomes — including puppies that were pet-placed (not kept for breeding) and why.
The Holdouts
Not every breeder is on board. Some cite competitive concerns ("I don't want other breeders to see my program details"). Others worry about privacy or liability. But the competitive argument cuts both ways — if your program can't withstand public scrutiny, that's a problem with the program, not with transparency.
